What does marketing or P.R. cost?

Most marketing and P.R. agencies will not quote details of their costs until they have received a full brief from the client.

In part, this is understandable as it’s often difficult to estimate how much work needs to be carried out for a new client until you’ve spent time studying their business, products and markets.

In part, however, it’s because many agencies have a time-based structure of charges and will typically quote hourly rates.  This makes it difficult for prospective clients to estimate at the outset exactly what a quarterly or annual P.R. or marketing campaign will cost.

There’s also a concern within many agencies, again understandable up to a point, about protecting information about their fees.

We’re different!

At 4CM we take a different approach, to make the way in which we carry out our services, and our charges, as transparent as possible.

As an example, for P.R. or media relations we have a scale of charges, with each item of media information that we write and place being priced at a set level.  Our normal production costs are therefore as follows:

New product style press release £220 or £420 depending on the level of detail
Case study/application story £595 for a telephone interview; site visit costs charged extra if required
Technical/feature article £850 for a 1200-1500 word article
All of the above include all research, briefings, production of draft and final versions.  We do not charge extra to make amendments, unless the client changes the original brief. All other costs are included unless otherwise specified

On this basis, it is relatively easy to calculate an annual budget for P.R. based on a set level of activities; to save you doing the calculation, most clients in the trade and technical sector spend between £12,000 and £24,000 per year on P.R. – bear in mind that the level of activity is often limited by the number of publications and web portals that are relevant.

We follow a similar system for all of our marketing communications activities, making it easy for clients to understand in advance what the costs will be.
