SKF, the knowledge engineering company, has introduced a new single nut hub design that has enhanced the performance of the Ferrari 458 Challenge sports car, a racing version of the Ferrari 458 Italia that competes in the single-make Italian and European Trofeo Pirelli Challenge.
The addition of a central, single nut clamping design on the wheel connection side allows an easier tyre change for Ferrari 458 Challenge drivers, which can save valuable time during a pit stop. The solution has also been proven to withstand the tough tracks that the Ferrari 458 Challenge has to tackle, which place an intense mechanical stress on the bearings, with lateral accelerations reaching 1.8G.
The Ferrari 458 Challenge car made its debut at Monza during the opening round of this season’s Italian and European Trofeo Pirelli Challenge. Powered by a 4,400cc GDI V8 engine, the Ferrari 458 Challenge delighted the 24,000 strong Monza crowd and showed improvements on the timesheets that certainly satisfied Ferrari.
SKF has been an official supplier to Ferrari since the legendary marque was founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1947. For over 60 years, SKF has established a strong reputation for supplying both race and road-going cars with components that offer total reliability in demanding environments. “With the harsh conditions that high performance racing has on the components in the car, we are forced to challenge ourselves to the maximum to find new innovative solutions that bring the race cars forward with ultimate speed and safety,” says Paolo Andolfi, Manager, SKF Racing Unit.
